The right size is what makes wall art look intentional rather than lost on the wall. Use these simple rules to get it right the first time.
The two-thirds rule
When hanging art above furniture — a sofa, bed, sideboard or desk — aim for the artwork (or group of artworks) to be about two-thirds the width of the furniture. A 180 cm sofa, for example, suits art around 120 cm wide. A single 60 × 40 cm piece will look small there, so consider a multi-panel layout or a gallery wall instead.
Hang at eye level
The centre of the artwork should sit roughly 145–155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave about 20–25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the art so they feel connected.
Size guide by room
- Living room feature wall: 60 × 40 cm as a single piece, or a split multi-panel design for wide walls.
- Bedroom above the bed: 60 × 40 cm, or two 40 × 30 cm pieces side by side.
- Home office or study: 40 × 30 cm above the desk.
- Hallways and corridors: a row of 30 × 20 cm or 40 × 30 cm pieces.
- Staircases: a 20 × 15 cm set of 5 hung in a diagonal line following the stairs.
- Gallery wall: a 15 × 10 cm set of 10 arranged in a grid or freeform cluster.

Quick tip: test before you buy
Cut newspaper or cardboard to the size you are considering and tape it to the wall. Live with it for a day. If it looks too small, it is — go one size up or choose a multi-panel layout.
